In recent times, the first half of the 20th century saw the occurrence of a series of triple eclipse between 1910 and 1945, which coincided with World War I and II, the Holocaust, and the nuclear bombings in Japan.

As per Dharm Sindhu and Nirnay Sindhu -the ancient books mentioning the effect of celestial events, “Whenever a triple eclipse occurs in a lunar month, it will cause mass destruction, discontent and suffering among the masses, decline of empires (symbolizing government in the present reference) and global wars.”

The Triple Eclipse will cause severe effects because it will be caused in the auspicious month of Shraavan and the Solar Eclipse will be occurring on the highly auspicious Pushya Nakshara.

This will be the longest Solar Eclipse witnessed by Indians in the 21st Century and this triple Eclipse will be followed by six sets of such triple eclipses that will continue till 2020. Hence, it marks the beginning of an Era of Triple Eclipses known to have always caused severe destruction.

The concern for India is that we are surrounded by nations facing internal political strife. The potential of this strife overflowing into India is pretty high and to make situations worse we have the Alarming beginning of the triple eclipse. The predicted path of the forthcoming eclipse and recently observed pattern of earthquakes hints that areas where this total eclipse will be visible in India are more susceptible to earthquakes and man-made and natural disasters.

According to Dharm Sindu (the ancient treatise on Religious rituals), “Grahsparshkaalesnaanam madhye homah suraarchanam shraadham chamuchyamaane daanam mukte snanmiti kramah” It means that a native must take bath at the beginning of the eclipse, do a homam and prayers while the eclipse is going on and do shraadh or daan at the conclusion of the eclipse. Following this ritual blesses the native with happiness of all kinds and prevents the evil effect of the eclipse.

It further explains that Food prepared before the ecipse must not be consumed during or after the Eclipse. As during the eclipse negative or harmful rays are circulated in the environment. It is therefore advised to remain indoors and avoid looking directly at the eclipse. These rays also get absorbed in the food. The cooked food should be eaten before eclipse. People should avoid eating and drinking during the eclipse phase too. Drinking water can be kept pure by adding Tulsi (Basil leaves). Tulsi leaves have religious, herbal as well as medicinal relevance. This keeps the water pure. One should also refrain from sleeping during this period. These tips should be strictly observed by pregnant women.

Maharshi Gautama in Parashar Madhava explains “All except the young, the old and the ill should stop eating four Prahars (12 hours) before a solar eclipse commences. The young, the old and the ill should stop eating one Prahar (3 hours) before an eclipse.”

After bathing, one should prepare food and offer it to their diety at home and then eat the Prasad. Many people give alms to the poor and the needy to derive some punya or benefits.

However, Bhargawa-archan-deepika and Jyotirnibandh mentions some eatables prepared before Eclipse to be allowed for consumption after eclipse. These are Ghee, Curd, Oil, Cooked Food, Milk and Milk products. It is suggested that ‘KUSHA’ must be kept over the vessles containing these food items.

Chinese New Year, pronounced in Chinese as ‘xin nian’ starts with the New Moon on the first day of the New Year and ends on the full moon 15 days later. Lantern Festival is then celebrated on the 15th day wherein people adorn their houses with different types of lanterns. There are many stories behind the Chinese festival.

According to one of the tales and legends, the beginning of Chinese New Year started with a fight against a mythical beast called the Nian or “Year” in Chinese.

Nian would come on the first day of New Year to devour livestock, crops, and even villagers, especially children. To protect themselves, the villagers would put food in front of their doors at the beginning of every year. It was believed that after the Nian ate the food they prepared, it wouldn’t attack any more people. One time, people saw that the Nian was scared away by a little child wearing red. The villagers then understood that the Nian was afraid of the color red. Hence, every time when the New Year was around, the villagers would hang red lanterns and red spring scrolls on windows and doors. People also used firecrackers to frighten away the Nian. From then on, the Nian never came to the village again. The Nian was eventually captured by Hongjunlaozu, an ancient Taoist monk. The Nian became Hongjunlaozu’s mount.

After the legend, lets move on to analyze the Chinese calendar. Their calendar is based on a combination of the moon and sun’s movements. The lunar cycle takes about 29.5 days for its completion. In order for the lunar cycle to match with the solar calendar, the Chinese have insert an extra month once in seven years out of a 19-year cycle. This is similar to adding an extra day on the leap year. This is why the Chinese New Year differs each year. There is also an interesting fact about the Chinese. They have 12 animals for each year and one of the animals represents every New Year. For instance, 2005 was the Year of Rooster; 2006 was the Year of Dog, 2007 was the Year of Pig and 2008 was the Year of the Rat and now 2009 is the Year of the Ox. So next time, if someone asks you for your date of birth, all you need to remember is Which year of animal were you born!

In China, the New Year’s Eve and New Year Day’s celebrations are kept as a family affair, a time of reunion and thanksgiving. It is celebrated in a religious way to honor Heaven and Earth, the Gods of the household and the family ancestors. When a celestial planet enters a new sign it is known as a transit. During a transit, the planets’ relation with other planets and Houses undergo a change in terms of aspects and conjunctions.

When the module of Illinois is further split into another nine modules, we find it falls into the northeast and east of that inner module denoting Jupiter and the Sun denoting wisdom and royalty.

Based on the above Vastu evaluation that integrates locations, directions and related planets with various aspects of power and fame, both the candidates have good Vastu related energies. That is, McCain moves from the area of strength and stability (through sector of aggressiveness) to the area of comfort and contentment, while Obama moves from the area of total awareness (through the sectors of wisdom and royalty) to the area of royalty. The word Deepawali is derived from two Sanskrit words – deepa, which means light, and Avali, which means a row. So, now you know why we find the diyas lined up in rows during this festival.

Deepawali is the festival of goddess Laxmi – who signifies prosperity, abundance and wealth – both material and spiritual. It is believed that goddess Laxmi visits everyone during the five days to shower us with peace and prosperity.

Deepawali is celebrated for five days; each day has its significance and ritual. Many legends, stories and myths are associated with the festival. Lets look at the significance of each day.

First Day: Dhan Teras or Dhana Triyodashi

Dhan Teras or the most important day of Deepawali, is celebrated every year on the thirteenth day of the Ashwini month.

This day has a very interesting story. According to the belief, the horoscope of sixteen-year-old son of King Hima stated that he was doomed to die by snakebite on the fourth day of his marriage. To evade his death, his young wife did not allow him to sleep. She laid all the ornaments and lots of gold and silver coins in a big heap at the entrance of her husband’s boudoir and lighted innumerable lamps. She helped him stay awake by telling stories and singing songs. When Yam, the God of death arrived in the guise of a serpent his eyes got blinded by the dazzle of the brilliant lights and he could not enter the chamber. So he climbed on top of the heap of the ornaments and coins and sat there the whole night listening to the melodious songs. In the morning, he quietly left the palace. Thus the young wife saved her husband from death. Since then this day of Dhan Teras was known as “YAMADEEPDAAN”. On this day, people light lamps throughout the night in reverential adoration to Yam.

On this day, we welcome goddess Laxmi with colorful rangoli, creating mini footprints and performing the Laxmi puja.

Second Day: Naraka Chaturdashi

This is the day when the demon Narakasur was killed by lord Krishna. When Krishna returned after killing Narakasur, his body was full of the bloodstains. To remove the bloodstains, the women applied oil on his body and gave him a good bath. From that day, we celebrate Naraka Chaturdashi by taking an oil bath and bursting firecrackers to mark the death of Narakasur.

The Third Day – Deepawali

This is the dark moon night, when all the houses are lighted with diyas. This is the last day in the Hindu financial year. We perform puja of our new account books and start a new page for the coming year.

Fourth Day – New Year Day

The fourth day is the day after the Laxmi Puja. It is the day of the new financial year. We dress up in new clothes and jewelry to signify a joyous new beginning. Lets leave the past behind and look forward positively towards the future. This is the best day to start new ventures, opening a shop or factory or start trading.

Fifth Day – Bhai Dhooj

The second day of the bright fortnight of Kartik is called the Bhai Dhooj. Many years ago, in the Vedic era, Yam (Yamraj, the God of death) visited his sister Yamuna (Yami) and she put the auspicious tilak on his forehead following which they enjoyed together and exchanged special gifts as a token of their love. Yamraj then announced that the relation stays intact if the sister honors her brother by applying the tilak on his forehead. Since then it became imperative for the brother to go to his sister’s house to celebrate Bhaiyaduj

Navratra festival is celebrated in India in praise of ‘Goddess Durga’. While Markendyo Purana tells the story of Goddess Durga and her victory over Mahisashur and other demons, in the common man it has remained in the form of different traditional cultures that essentially continues to reverberate the pure sentiment of the occasion as always the same – “victory of good over evil”.

An ancient treatise known as Devi Mahatmyam or Durga Saptasati describes the battle of the powerful Durga with various demons that dislodged the gods and goddesses from their divine abode. It is a brilliant poem in Sanskrit; the seven hundred slokas are symbolic of the soul’s journey to liberation.

In Bhagavat Geeta Lord Krishna says

This translates to

“Verily this divine Maya of mine made up of the three ‘gunas’ is difficult to cross over. Those who take refuge in Me, they alone cross over it”.(VII-13 &14)

The nine nights festival commences on the first day of Ashwin of the bright fortnight and culminates on the tenth day of Vijay Dashami. Devi Durga is worshipped each day and night in one of her forms. Each of these forms has a special significance, these forms destroy demons that are symbolic of negativities or evils till such time that all obstacles are destroyed and there is liberation.

In Hindu philosophy, evil that is lodged within carried and energized by our negative karmic deeds through previous births are just as strong as those that attack us from outer sources.
